Statement of Teaching Philosophy

As an instructor of English Language Arts, my aim is to motivate students to explore the world beyond the classroom through the art of literature. In order to improve the educational conditions of underrepresented students, I practice and continually refine pedagogical strategies based on culturally relevant teaching. This strategy is implemented to improves the cultural competence of the teacher, student, and curriculum.

I believe that teaching in a multicultural setting enables teachers to relate to student and students to relate content to his or her own cultural experiences. Cultural teaching methods reveal how culture, background knowledge, and content are intimately woven together and are needed to push students to new elevations. 

The principles of culturally relevant teaching allow me as an educator to adopt the perspectives of the learner and to lead by example. Every day I grow in my role as an educator. I believe that forming a solid foundation based on a student's cultural background will increase their knowledge beyond the classroom. I apply my own knowledge to everyday practices and strive alongside students to reach new heights unknown.

Goal Setting 

We begin with a reading level assessment in order to set goals and recognize individual learning needs. 

One on One Tutoring 

Each student at DTO will receive one-on-one tutoring and support to maximize their learning. It is our goal to educate the whole child.
